When the feather permits it with it's structure I tie it to the paper with yarn.
A stick smaller than a match or a toothpick holds the yarn behind the paper.
I don't cut the ends of yarn before the work is otherwise fully finished.
My mom's old sowing kit has a handy helper to pull the from under the feather where a needle doesn't fit.
